Chronology of cameras Pipon
Despite its name, The Self Worker is indeed French and was carefully constructed by the brothers Jules and Alexandre Pipon in Paris starting from 1898. The Self-Worker was available in two formats: 6.5 x 9 and 9 x 12 (or, in 1898 only, 83 x 108). It was also produced as a stereo model, and later as a stereo-panoramic model in 1904.
It's a parallelepiped-shaped twin-lens camera made of wood covered in leather, featuring a removable magazine for 12 plates. The camera is equipped with a pneumatic shutter with bulb mode and various adjustable speeds controlled by two buttons. It has two tripod sockets with Congress threads.
Its distinctive feature lies in its focusing mechanism, which involves a radial lever located on the right side. When rotated slightly more than a quarter turn, it engages a rack and pinion system for focusing.

Cet exemplaire de Self Worker porte le numéro 4261. Il est quasiment identique à celui portant le numéro 4200. Les deux sont du modèle de 1904 selon Etienne Gérard. Ils diffèrent du modèle initial de 1898 de même format (6,5 x 9).
Les deux versions, semblables pour leur construction et leur fonctionnement, se distinguent non seulement par la couleur noire et non plus marron du gainage de cuir, mais aussi par quelques évolutions. La principale concerne le viseur pliant qui dispose, ici, sur le magasin, d’un œilleton pliant pour la visée à hauteur d’œil et comporte, sur le viseur, un miroir basculant permettant la visée à hauteur de poitrine.
L’objectif reste un Krauss de 100 mm et f8 mais devient un Protar-Zeiss. Les diaphragmes sont notés selon l’ancien système français de ¾ à 16 (soit 8 à 40). Le blocage du magasin sur la jumelle a été également modifié
